I have to say that there is nothing random about the deed that I am going to tell you about. In fact, this is something that my family plan to do every year...
Ever since my twins were born I have showered them with toys. While hubby and I are thankful that our three children have a great collection of toys, we are also saddened that many others go without. Especially at Christmas. And so, throughout the course of the year, whenever we buy a toy for our kids, we would pick up an extra for the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation. At the end of the year when the Marines have their TOT drive in full swing, we will load up our mini-van full of toys and make the drive to their nearest toys pick up location.
Hubby unloading the carload of toys. (2008) |
Toys, toys, toys! (2008) |
This year will be the 4th year that we have saved our toys for the TOT campaign and I can't wait to make that drive. The gratitude on the Marines' faces never fail to warm our hearts and I can only hope that our contribution will help to brighten a child's day during the Holidays.
Whether you contribute to a large charity or, share an extra coupon with a fellow shopper in the store, I hope that the posts in today's Blog Hop will inspire you to do something nice.
***
Now let's go on to today's card:
The idea for this card has been brewing in my head since I first set eyes on Lettering Delight's Spooktacular Set. It is LD's Sneak Peek of the Month for October and can only be added to your cart when you are checking out.
The expression on the cat's face crack me up every time I see it. I wanted to make a card that shows something scaring the cat so when Hubby suggested that I use a mouse, I was thrilled to find that the mouse from the DB Animal Occasion set was simply purr-fect!
Using Make-the-Cut, I managed to trace the images into this:
I cut off the cat's whiskers on the (white) base layer and put together the layers of the cat with foam tape.
I was not able to find the right shade of grey paper for the mouse cut so I went over the cut out with some dark grey chalk. I used foam tape to stick the mouse down to the card. The ghost and the "boo!" sentiment are from the DB Boo Ya doodlebat set. I cut out the ghost on a piece of vellum so that the mouse shows through from below the ghost cutout. I adhered the ghost with a small piece of tape from my ATG so that it can still be partially lifted up to reveal the whole mouse.
The greeting at the bottom of the card was cut out from the LD Woodland font. I used Martha Stewart's Drippy Goo punch for the decorative border.
I hope that you got a chuckle out of this card. Now, for even more fun stuff...
Robyn, aka My Pink Stamper, has generously donated a My Pink Stamper Cricut Fun DVD (Vol. 2) for today's giveaway. Thank you, Robyn!

ReplyDeleteWe do a similar thing to Toys for Tots at our boys school. We swap with our sister elementary school and give to less fortunate families. We always have a tree with tags on it for items needed and my boys and I always have a hard time walking past that tree without grabbing "just one more tag!" lol We always make sure to go back to look just before the take the tree down and grab whatever tags are left over so we can fill those needs.
Thanks for letting us hop along with you!

Thanks for sharing your story. Each year when I'm doing my day after Thanksgiving shopping, I pick up extra games / toys to give either through our church, Toys for Tots, or my sister's sponsored family at school. It's not about the money you spend, but about the thoughts and spirit of giving.

The expression on the cat's face IS priceless. Love it. TFS. I actually work at the Boys and Girls Club of America so I am usually doing something for someone but I don't like to toot my own horn. One thing I used to do when money was funny and there was more money at the end of the month, I used to go to the drive thru and pay for the car behind me. I would try to take off so they wouldn't know who I was. The funniest thing though happened one time. A lady chased me down (and I mean chased) and made me roll down the window. She caught the spark and said that she planned to do something nice for someone too.

Wow, that is such a generous thing to do. I donate several toys every year to the Marines Toys for Tots and I have my kids help pick them out so they learn the value to give back. bobbim1271[at]yahoo[dot]com
ReplyDeleteGreat story Jin. My DD is in JROTC in high school and they work very hard during the Toys for Tots drives. Last year, we ended up with $9,000 to spend on toys. It was really fun to go with the kids to WalMart to help pick out stuff. We ended up with 24 carts full of toys. It was really great. I'm looking forward to doing it again this year.

Wonderful card. I luv it.
ReplyDeleteLoved your story especially because your cause is one that has been near and dear to me for many years. I am now retired from North Island Naval Air Base here in San Diego and for many years I was very active in the Toys for Tots drive. I always felt that no child should go without Christmas!!! Kids have no control of the situations that were bestowed on them by their parents decisions. I found that most people are very generous and giving during the Holidays if someone just took the initiative of organizing the drive. We were always able to exceed the goals and everyone enjoyed the fact that they had made at least one child's Christmas a happier one. Thanks for sharing your story and I think it is wonderful to be teaching your kids community involvement. I have 9 month old twin granddaughters and I hope to get them involved very soon.

ReplyDeleteYour story brought tears to my eyes. Your generosity to others has made me think that this would be a great lesson to teach my 4 year old.
Your story is wonderful! My daughter (she is 10) volunteers for the special education school that is near her elementary school instead of having recess she spends her time there, she has been doing it for 3 years now, and has made some great friends there so this year for halloween me and her are makeing 65 little treat bags to give to them, some are on special diets so we have a list and each bag will have goodies each one can eat! I am truely humbled by the thoughtfulness of my child!

yes! too funny.
ReplyDeleteBTW - it's great you donate a toy at the toy drive we do a similar thing - by pulling a family name off the giving tree.

I love toys for tots! What a fantastic organization! I have twin boys... We always had extras to share (that is toys). After Christmas my boys now bring me their toys and items that they really do not care for or they know they do not need... they learned a long time ago...just say thank you and don't open them...mom will save them in a tub for next year. When you come from a big family with divorced grandparents sometimes way too much is purchased! I love your card... I am not sure if I want Make the cut or a gypsy? I need to do way more research... I have an expression. My favorite thing is paper piecing so in a way Make the cut... sounds good... but I would love to be able to blend some of my words... Who knows! pjritsema at gmail dot com

Love your cards! I asked my 3 year old last year to pick out 2 toys that he would really like, and then we went to a local Toys for Tot drop and he put the toys in there. He had second thoughts on the way home, but I explained to him how not everyone has lots of toys like he does, and that it's nice to share. I don't know if a 3 yo gets that, but he seemed content. Plan to do it again this year.
