TUTORIAL: How to Print-and-Cut SVGs with Silhouette Studio (Designer Ed.)

I have a quick tutorial for the Silhouette users today. I've been wanting to play with the Lettering Delights' Nutcracker Takeout Boxes but I'm preparing to go on a vacation and I don't really have time to handle multi-layer projects now. So I print-and-cut the SVGs out instead.

Printing-and-Cutting makes for a quick project but in this case, it also enables me to reduce the size of the boxes without having to handle small layers. I'm really not a fan of teeny tiny bits of paper that I have to handle with tweezers. In the picture above, the smaller boxes are half the size of the original SVGs.

For today's project, I used my Silhouette Cameo with Silhouette Studio (Designer Ed.)

1. To print-and-cut the LD SVG, first import the image to the virtual mat and position it so that it is within the cutting zone.

2. Right-Click, and Ungroup

3. Click on the brown layer, then Open the Cut Style window and select Cut.

4. Click on the Silhouette button and proceed to Print-and-Cut.

The Nutcracker Takeout Boxes Cut Its include 6 different designs. As the score lines in file #2 and file #4  are in white, they will show when the boxes are printed out.

Unlike the smaller box on the right, the score lines on the bigger box are not visible.

These white score lines can be easily hidden so that they will not be visible in the finished project.

Follow Steps 1-2 above to bring the image to the mat, position within the cut zone, and Ungroup.

Next, open the Line Color window and  click on the Color Picker.

Bring the Color Picker over to the brown background layer and click on it.

The white dashed/score lines are now colored brown and will no longer be visible when printed.

Make sure to switch on the Cut lines in the Cut Style window before sending to the Silhouette to cut.

I wanted to know that you are fabulous and that if I hadn't found your blog and videos I would have ripped my hair out by now. LOVE your blog! Thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU

  3. Is this possible without the Designer edition software? I want to get the $100 LD bundle and I want to make sure I can print and cut with the free version Silhouette studio. I am a newbie to the Silhouette so I am still learning.

  4. I think I found the answer. I see you can't cut SVG's so I wouldn't be able to. I already have SCAL so I really don't want to purchase another program. I am bummed!

  5. Hi Nancy, I see from the CraftEdge site that SCAL is compatible with the Silhouette Cameo. If so, you can certainly use SVGs with it. http://craftedge.com/products/products_scal.html

  6. Thanks JIn! I have used SCAL with my Cameo. I was just hoping to get more out of them with the print and cut feature.

  7. " How does print and cut work? I read somewhere the Cameo doesn’t recognize the registration marks SCAL prints."

And I tried it myself, it really can't read the registration by SCAL 3!

    Any help on this?
