How to Uninstall Silhouette Studio version 3

This is for those of you who wanted to know how to uninstall Silhouette Studio version 3.0.293 and go back to using the previous version.

If you are using Silhouette Studio Designer Edition, please DEACTIVATE your license key first so that you can use it again. To deactivate, just click Help, select De-activate License Key, and follow the instructions from there. After you have de-activated the license key, proceed to uninstall the program by following the instructions below.

To uninstall version 3, just run the install file again and this screen will show up:


Just hit Next and then Remove.


Once the software has been removed from your computer,go HERE to download the Legacy (i.e. previous) version 2.9.45 and install that. It will not install the Designer Edition (DE). If you were using DE before you will need to input your license key again to use the upgrade. If you had purchased your DE from Silhouette America, you can find that info in your account history. Each license key can only be used 3 times but you can call Silhouette America to reset that.

    1. I couldn't have said it better myself, Drea! I just spent 2 hours trying to get the new version I finally gave in to and downloaded to stop "syncing" and just cut my design!!! So annoying. Went back to the old version and it works like a charm. This is why I never update any software on anything!! Nothing but problems. #dontmesswithagoodthing

  2. Thank you so much for these directions! I think V3 will be a lot nicer once they work out the bugs. I can't imagine why they would release a product that has not been thoroughly tested.... Plus, I've taken a few Silhouette classes and when I review them again, I would like to have the version that is in the videos. Hopefully, we will be able to install V3 and still have V2 also.

  3. You are an absolute savior with these directions! I can't believe that the V3 does not have cut style options where you can make the text print, rather than just cut. I was so sad I upgraded to the V3 and love the old version so much better. Happy I found this blog so I could reinstall the last version. Yay! Thank you!!

  5. Thank you!! This was the key to my sanity. I had opened both an older version,cut file and new, simple circles with new version. It froze my computer and had to force shut down. My Designer Addition came back, after your instructions, with out a problem. I'm not sure if I'll go back to V3 if they don't, at least, make things compatible. I love change but I'll see how much they fix it before I try again.

  6. Thank you - I didn't mind figuring out the V3 - BUT it froze and I could not open it any more and tried to re-install and it did the same thing. I hope that the new version has the bugs fixed because I would like to use some of the features it offers.

  7. Thank you, I thought it was just me. Seems they release beta versions and clearly don't know their audience. I wish the Silhouette plugin for MTC was not so buggy. Aligns on the right instead of the left and the registration marks are on the wrong side when cutting. Sure makes using MTC with with Silhouette unnecessarily difficult. Still can't PNC with MTC. Maybe in the future? Seems sloppy programming. But that's just me.

    My sketch pen settings were coming out really bad with the new version, so I had to revert to the old. Thanks for the instructions. Im glad I was able to roll back to the earlier version as I use my cameo for business and this would have really caused a big problem for me.

  13. I'm hoping that I am successful at reinstalling the previous version. Sadly, when I went through the trouble shooting steps on the website, it suggested that if all else fails, reset (essentially delete) the library because it likely is corrupted. Great, now that's gone and I have to re-download everything. Keeping my fingers crossed that going back to the previous version works for me.

  15. Can I backup my saved files and reinstall them on the old version after I remove ver. 3? I'm not real sure on backing them up though. I lost all of my files once before when my hard drive crashed. I really don't want to go through that again. I've got some really cool files that took a long time to build.

  16. Question: If I uninstall all the Silhouette software, will I loose all of the shapes in my library? Do I need to back them up first?

    I am so glad to see that I am not the only person frustrated with the new version!!

  17. Thank you so much for letting us know there is a way to uninstall that V3 version. I was very frustrated with it as well. Now are your instuctions for the PC Windows only? I have a Mac computer and I don't see the same box as you are showing.

  18. it did mess up with my Registration mark big time lol. wasted almost half day thinking what went wrong i cant print n cut using the whole space even still has space inside the red cut line boundary theres always untouch 2.5cm even i set my registration to 1cm all side with a cutting mat

  20. Will I need my key code to reinstall the old one? I'm so mad that I updated to the new one because there's so many things I don't like! I need to get some things done this weekend and can't find my disc with the key code anywhere! :( I don't want to totally delete if I need the key code to reinstall the old one back!

  22. Hi Thank you so much for all your information on this. I have just successfully deleted this horrible programme and with your excellent instructions managed to reinstall the old version and used my DE card to upgrade. I only updated it because the email from Silhouette gives the impression its part of regular updates, similiar to the cricut updates. Had I realised this was a whole new version I would have been more careful. Hopefully Im back on track again!!!

    1. Cheryl, are you referring to the license key? If you bought your software from the Silhouette America store, you will see the number after you log into your account.

  29. Reverted back to old version from v 3 - but can't access any images in my library
    It says need to update to latest version to access them..??
    Anyone have this problem too??
    And able to rectify it??

  30. The new edition is complete rubbish but they tried to tell me everyone else was happy with it, which is a complete lie. Not a company you can trust anymore. I wish there was an alternative I would buy it. They don't deserve your business when they tell you lies.

  31. How do I access the setup wizard to follow your directions? I cannot find this screen anywhere. When I try to "update" it tells me there are no updates and won't take my any further. I HATE this new version- nothing cuts cleanly anymore. HELP! :)

  33. Just wanted to say a Big Thank You. I have been having so much trouble since the new update (I use DE and since the V3 update my Silhouette Cameo would not cut out the whole image, very annoying and a waste of cardstock).
    Having spent hours searching for answers and getting nowhere I stumbled upon your site and having followed your advise I now have the old DE version reinstalled and yes my machine is back cutting as it did before.

  36. If I deactivate the license key per your tutorial will I be able to then re-install Silhouette Design Edition on a new computer?? Will the entire library (including what I have created) transfer to the new computer?

  37. I'm just getting into cutting / plotting with paper. I'm very glad to hear that I am not the Only One who thinks that this Studio software it utter Crap. The lag time between a key-stroke and the visual response upon the "work space" is Absolutely Pathetic. I'm amazed that the Nice People at Silhouette call this "software".

    1. I just downgraded my wife's PC from 3.3.277 to the "Legacy" (Stable) 2.9.45d and so far there are no problems. I'd still wait a while on ver3 :(

  39. I am having such a hard time using the Silhouette Studio program. I purchased the Portrait this month and the lag time is ridiculous. Is anyone else having this problem? I can't do simple things such as highlight my text. Is it me or the program????

    1. I don't have the Portrait but I find the lag time in Silhouette Studio v3.xx horrible. Are you using the Legacy version? In my opinion it is way better than the new version and there is hardly any lag time (unless the design is super complicated or if there is too many graphics in use). You can download the Legacy version HERE. Just scroll all the way down the page to find the link to the download.

  40. In the help section my deactivate key number is not clickable like the other things under help. I hope someone can help me with this. I am new cameo user and was just getting use to the V2, never should have downloaded the V3. Please Help. Thank you.

    1. Do you have the Designer Edition (DE)? The Deactivate key will be clickable only if you have the DE version. If you are running the DE version and the key is not clickable, you can still uninstall v3. You just need to contact Sil Support to request that they reinstate the number of times you can activate DE (i.e. 3 times).

  42. I just received a new Silhouette Portrait as a gift. It came with the Studio V 3.2 disk but that will not load at all. It starts and fails soon after indicating I should try again. From comments above it seems I should be wary of the V 3.2 software anyway. Suggestions on a solution?

  43. I have been watching videos on print and cut. Seems the boxes Im told to click on are not in the same places on mine as they are clicking. I have not added any new programs since V 3. My cameo is about 4 years old. Now several things Im having trouble with. I think I should try uninstall. But so nervous! The customer help I feel has gone down many many notches in the last year. Very sad! why would my buttons be in different places??

  44. my portrait WILL NOT CONNECT with the newest software update, but for some reason it works fine with v2? i bought the designer edition upgrade - will it work with v2? because the instructions say to update the software. i dont really want to do that, find the machine wont connect again and go to the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling everything

  46. my screen on my old computer quick working so how do i deactivate the liscense key, when i go to deactivate on the new computer it is not highlighted and will not let me select it, is it because it is not deactivated on the old computer
