How to Color a Dingbat in Silhouette Studio (for print-and-cut)

After posting about the free Faces dingbat, some of you cleverly searched for other kawaii dingbats by the same designer. Thanks go out to Ivy Toh and Crafty Tami for sharing their finds (http://www.dafont.com/search.php?fpp=20&q=kawaii or http://www.dafont.com/epso.d1457?fpp=20) on my Facebook page. While looking at the files, I recalled that I have downloaded Kokeshi Kawaii several months ago but never got around to using it. Well, now sounds like a pretty good time to give it a try. :-)

By using Silhouette Studio, I managed to add colors to the doll in a few simple steps. Here is a video that walks you through the process:

By the way, I forgot to mention it in the video but I am still using SSDE v2.2.0d. I realized that some of you who are using the new version may see some differences between my version of the program and yours but the method of adding colors should be the same. Also, you do not need the Designer Edition to add colors to a dingbat since we are not using any SVGs. The free Silhouette Studio program that came with your cutter would work for following this tutorial.

I made a shadow layer of the doll and placed it on top of a 4.0" x 4.0" square and a 9" x 4.5" card base. I ended up printing the card and trimming it with my paper cutter instead of doing a print-and-cut.

In case you are wondering, you can also print and cut the layers out separately and use them for paper-piecing. I'll show you some tips about that in my next post later (I had originally intended to post the tips in the next post but had to tend to another project that was more urgent. I will post the tips on another day. Sorry!).

To get the Kokeshi Kawaii file, just click HERE to download from dafont.com.

These are the LD papers that I used for the notecard:

Love is Sweet (Red)
Pop School (Orange)
Ice Cream Funday (Blue)

  8. Excellent Jin.
Question: Is the ability to capture your own patterns only available with the Designer Edition of Sil Studio? I don't see anything about it on the Silhouette site describing the features of the Designer Edition.
